When it seems like there are never enough hours in the day to complete all that needs to be done, perhaps time is not the enemy. Shifting your focus towards energy management may be a better approach and that is why Be Well is launching a new initiative: Be Well Breaks!
Research shows that microbreaks throughout the workday can help employees engage with their work better. “Microbreaks are short, voluntary and impromptu respites in the workday” (Science Daily, 2021) Microbreaks are an effective recovery technique that employees can use to restore their energy over the course of the day. In addition to smaller periods of recovery throughout the day, lunch breaks are an important part of a productive workday. One survey conducted with North American workers found that employees who routinely took lunch breaks were more likely to have higher job satisfaction, productivity, and recommend their place of work to others.
Be Well is encouraging all UT faculty and staff to engage in Be Well Breaks throughout the workday to practice self-care and energy management. Be Well Breaks can be a healthy and productive part of the University of Tennessee’s work environment.
The best type of break to take is one that leaves the body and mind feeling rested and energized to complete the next task.
