February is Heart Disease Awareness Month

Give yourself the best valentine – Make your heart healthy.

Nearly 80 percent of heart disease and stroke can be prevented by lifestyle changes.

  • Walking for 30 minutes, 5 days a week can halve the risk of heart disease. It also will lower stress, cholesterol, and blood pressure.
  • Eating a nutritious, well-balanced diet is one of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce your risk of heart disease. Trade white grains for whole grains. Substitute high-fat meats for lean options. Pick low or fat-free dairy options over full fat or regular dairy.
  • If you smoke or a tobacco user you can improve your heart health immediately as soon as stop. Within 20 minutes of quitting smoking, your heart rate drops back to a normal level. After a couple of weeks, your heart attack risk begins to drop and your lung functions begins to improve.
