Whether you are looking to begin a fitness routine or trying to find ways to relax and unwind after work, Be Well offers a variety of fitness classes free for UT employees. Community instructors will be invited to teach an array of classes including yoga, pilates, bootcamp, etc. Classes will be held periodically during week day evenings beginning at 5:15pm in the Student Health Center Room 206A/B.
*Staff and students with current UT parking permits may park in unreserved staff and commuter areas from 5:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. (4:45 pm in Staff Area 9 and Staff Area 23).
Power Yoga works to tone muscles as it builds flexibility and stamina and increases breath capacity. Breath is connected to movement and the flow focuses on weight-bearing standing poses. The internal body heat that is built assists in stretching and flexibility. Power Yoga is an accessible way for anyone to increase flexibility while also getting a workout. No prior yoga experience is necessary, however for those with established yoga practices, advanced options can be offered.
FitBox Boot camp workouts can vary but generally include a fairly intense mix of strength training and aerobic elements. One boot camp workout might stress calisthenics, balance, flexibility, accuracy, power, speed, agility strength among other aspects of physical fitness.
In most cases, you can expect to do calisthenics, such as squats, pushups, lunges and crunches, as well as drills and sprints. In essence, a boot camp workout is a type of interval training — bursts of intense activity alternated with intervals of lighter activity.
Class will be a one-hour mix of hatha flow and yin. The flow portion will build strength, balance, and coordination while the yin portion will build resilience and mindfulness through targeted, passive stretching. This combination of exertion and surrender will leave the student feeling balanced, grounded, and calm. No previous yoga experience is required, as modifications will be given to make class both accessible for the beginner yet challenging for the advanced student. Bring your own mat and accessories, though extra mats, blocks and straps will be available at no charge.
